The Lisbon hotel that is one big toilet

Last week local hotel operator Beautique opened its second property, the curiously named WC Beautique Hotel. Envisioned by the star of Portuguese design, Nini Andrade Silva, it is themed around the WC - water closet in Dutch for toilet and several other languages. Euphemistically bathroom in English or banho in Portuguese...

The first line of the hotel's website reads A huge WC! Indeed, a curious name. Guests are greated by a glass reception desk which holds two bath tubs and is lighted by gigantic showerheads. On the lower floor, the restaurant gives the sensation of movement and fluidity in an optical illusion that the set of mirrors transmits when reflecting images of waterfalls that multiply throughout the space. Guestrooms have water coloured tiles... on the walls and feature open plan bathrooms.

For Andrade Silva the hotel "is irreverent and dedicated to people ageless, young, creative and with an enormous passion for avant-garde, daring, freshness and art. It arises from the fusion of the traits characteristic of a (in)temporality , from which emerges the current concept, which, with special meaning, is born from inspiration in a liquid world, from baths, water, vapors and drips, culminating in a huge WC by which we feel walk barefoot touching the floor dotted with foam and the walls damp and fresh." Andrade Silva also designed the first Beautique property, the Hotel Figueira. Plus a string of hotels which can be found in these pages.

The WC Beautique Hotel is located on Avenida Almirante Reis, in the upcoming (like so many Lisbon) district(s) of Arroios. The nearest metro stop Intendente is just a two-minute walk and the historic city centre can be reached in 10-15 minutes walk. The hotel has 41 rooms (on the small side, ranging from 15 to 25m2 - on suite of 38m2), a restaurant serving Portuguese fare and a cocktail bar.

The first reviews are extremely positive "great concept" "fantstic staff" "excellent breakfast" "an experience". But would you sleep in a toilet? Leave your comments below.
