Set in a former power station, Stroom (stream in Dutch, meaning power, electricity and river) is a cutting-edge design hotel located in the harbour district of Rotterdam. Minimalist, stylish rooms come with glass-enclosed rain showers, signature beds, air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, iPod docking stations and some with Nespresso machines and SMEG fridges. Most rooms are split-level with open-plan bathrooms, some with sauna. Downstairs is an informal restaurant where breakfast (own bakery) is served. Weather permitting, the roof terrace is a great place to sit out and enjoy the view of the emblematic Euromast.

hippest hotel in Holland

Stroom Rotterdam is housed in a disused powerhouse. The name itself "Stroom" in Dutch means stream and relates to both electricity and river, the Meuse river running nearby. It is located just west of the city centre in an up-and-coming area, once part of the still enormous harbours of Rotterdam. I had a "videsuite" which comes with an added floor. Basically you enter the room in the bathroom which occupies the downstairs part of the suite. This is taking the term 'open-plan' bathroom to the limits! There is a bath for two and the seperate shower 'room' also comes with two rainshower heads. Very romantic indeed! Loved the Anatomicals toiletries, which as expected are as hip as the hotel itself. Don't be afraid, you can close off the toilet... Upstairs is the bed (just fantastic, a Coco-mat one which compares to a Hastens) and a single lounger. The suite comes full with gadgeries and necesseties: you get your own iPod, there's a docking station, wifi, giant flatscreen TV, Bose surround system, etc... Not to mention there is both underfloor heating and airconditioning! Yeah! Communal areas are limited, there is a good restaurant which serves breakfast (lovely!), lunch, high tea till dinner and there is a rooftop terrace. Loved the Stroom, the industrial feel to it which is very Rotterdam. The young staff is training on the job and doing a good thing being very helpful. Highly recommended, definitely Holland's hippest hotel. My opinion: you have seen Amsterdam, try Rotterdam for a refreshing change!
