King of the castle

Sometimes you stay at a hotel, and sometimes (very few times, actually) you have a hotel \'experience\'. The kind that lingers in your system, while other hotelstays have gone long gone. When checking in at the Hotel Farol a September afternoon I found out that they were full that night, to be pleasantly surprised I was upgraded to the Suite. I felt like king of the castle: from my balcony, glass of wine in the hand, I was overlooking the pool, the gardens, the lounging guests on the terraces and ofcourse, the magnificent Atlantic Ocean. At the entrance gate it says Farol Hotel...On the water. Well, that is kind of an understatement. It was a bit of a pity I stayed so long out on the balcony as the suite had so much to offer. The design was very tasteful and completely monochrome: mostly everything black (including the carpet, am I glad I am not the cleaning lady!) and white walls. The classic styled, marble-clad bathroom had a window -perfect for ventilation and view- and a jacuzzi bath. The room a very comfortable bed, fresh smelling sheets, Nespresso machine. This is a hotel with all the works that are actually working. Breakfast in the morning was plentiful and again with a view of the Atlantic. I didn\'t try the restaurant but everyone I met in Portugal that week was telling me \"Staying at Farol? Did you have dinner there? No? Pity...it\'s fantastic!\" Well...next time surely! Lunch at the pool was very relaxing and I should recommend getting a massage, again: that fantastic Atlantic view. You can be King of the castle every other day of the year...

Had a relaxing stay, this is a beautiful old villa with modern annex on the rocky coast between Cascais village and wind-swept Guincho beach where the surfers are. The hotel is really intimate and laid-back, very much a boutique hotel. Found the food and wines in the restaurant top-notch at very moderate prices. After all the Estoril coast is very chique, no wonder king Umberto of Italy took refuge here. The rooms come in different styles and shapes, pick one to your liking.
