The Standard, Downtown LA is set in the former headquarters of the Superior Oil company. The hotel's unique retro-inspired interiors are bright and funky.
Spacious rooms (27-65m2) come with air conditioning, cable TVs, DVD players, iPod docking stations and bathrooms with glass walk-in showers and oversized tubs. The minibar contains not just snacks and drinks but also such goodies as disposable cameras and Mr. Bubble bath foam.
The plush (and bright yellow) restaurant is open round the clock, as is room service, and the menu, refreshingly enough, is both familiar and affordable. The lobby bar is a scene unto itself but the real action happens upstairs, in the retro-futuristic rooftop lounge, where red-suited waitresses serve cocktails surrounded by the panorama of the skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles.
The rooftop pool and sundeck boasts scarlet Perspex seating pods, waterbed cabanas and sun loungers. SPiN ping pong club and social lounge. Barber, gift shop and photobooth. 24-hour fitness centre.
