Once San Francisco’s grandest old-fashioned luxury hotel, the 1915-built Clift underwent a thorough re-imagining at the hands of Philippe Starck, who has transformed its faded Victorian elegance into its nearest modern equivalent — all black, ivory and steely grey, with rich textures in hardwood, velvet and leather. The lobby has an art installation which includes pieces by Salvador Dali and Charles Eames.
The contemporary classic rooms, ranging from standard quarters to private apartments, have sleigh beds, flat-screen HDTVs and WiFi at a fee. Bathrooms come with Malin + Goetz complimentary toiletries. In-room spa services and 24-hour room service are available.
The famous Redwood Room was the focus of the original Clift, and it’s still here in all its wood-paneled splendor, plus some of Starck’s lounge furniture added. The centerpiece of the room, the large redwood bar, is carved from a single redwood tree. The Velvet Room restaurant serves seasonal local food.
Other facilities include a 24-hour gym and free bicycles.
24-hour front desk.
