Commissioned by King Carlos I and opened in 1910, the luxurious Vidago Palace Hotel is set in a pink Belle Epoque style building. A recent €50-million refurbishment brings bring glory to the high-ceilings, stucco artwork and floor-to-ceiling flourishes of classic Noble architecture. The hotel is located in the spa town of Vidago, one of the Tràs-os-Montes ("behind the mountains") region's many mineral waters spas. The hotel is almost hidden by the tall trees of the surrounding parkland and an 18-hole championship golf course.
Bedrooms and suites (23-53m2) are decorated in a timeless style in muted colours and there are great views from every bed through floor-to-ceiling windows. Room facilities include LCD TVs, work desks, minibars and a spacious seating area. Some rooms have furnished terraces. Room service available.
Dining options include the Salão Nobre Dining Room in the vast former ballroom, the conservatory-roofed Winter Garden and the elegant Club House bar and restaurant, originally a bottling plant for the spa waters. Sample the region’s most famous export wine can be tasted at the palace's wine cellar or signature cocktails in the dark, masculine Smoke Room (think dark wood and darker leather) or the bright Four Seasons Room, with its walls covered in pale silk. The extensive spa has 20 rooms, five of which are dedicated to water therapies using local mineral water and essential oils from plants grown on the Palace grounds. Guests can choose between indoor or outdoor pools.
