A medieval hostel surrounded by 50 hectares of its own vineyards (one of Umbria's top winemakers), Locanda Palazzone is set in rolling countryside just 5 km outside of Orvieto.
According to the best available archaeological evidence, the Locanda Palazzone provided lodging for pilgrims on their way to Rome for the First Jubilee, in the year 1300 — maybe one of the first ever roadside motels. 21st century pilgrims come here for quiet, cutting-edge design and urban-style loft-living. Original hardwood floors are combined with primary-colored modern furnishings. And the huge, church-like, vaulted lobby has a glass-and-iron lift.
The theme continues in the seven spacious suites with original features and designer furniture. All air-conditioned, they feature kingsize beds, a flat-screen TV, DVD-player, free Wi-Fi and tea and coffee-making facilities. Bathrooms have baths or walk-in showers and Bvlgari and Sa di Sapone toiletries.
A buffet breakfast of homemade croissants, cakes and marmalades is served each morning. When the weather’s fine, breakfast is served out on the canopied terrace with views over the vineyards in the valley. The restaurant, open on request, serves a set lunch or dinner. Expect Umbrian cuisine, intensely flavoured and strikingly presented by the Japanese chef.
There’s an honesty bar next to the restaurant on the lower ground floor – kick your evening off here with wine-tastings and home-made nibbles before dinner. The grand room has gothic arches and a large open fire.
In the gardens, where there is only the sound of birds guests can enjoy the swimming pool on a low-walled terrace overlooking the vineyards.
