Casa Modesta | Olhão, Algarve

A contemporary rural tourism with sleek, minimalist lines in the enchanting countryside next to the Ria Formosa Natural Park.

Set in the lush, wild environs of the quiet Eastern Algarve, Casa Modesta is a rural hotel with a distinct contemporary Portuguese edge. From here watch the migration of birds, the practice of shellfish gathering or the harvesting of salt, and everyday be astonished by the small miracles that Nature performs.

The owner named the property after his mother, Modesta Maria, who grew up in the original 1940s house built by his grandfather, a local fisherman. Transformed by his sister, the humble home now features nine minimalist suites, each with private bathrooms and patios. The exterior’s clean cubic aesthetic introduces an unfussy interior featuring vaulted brick ceilings and traditional terracotta floor tiles, cedar furnishings and bespoke cork and brass lamps.

Surrounded by acres of orange, lemon, fig and carrob trees, the hotel’s garden-cum-greenhouse provides fresh organic vegetables for the kitchen, while a range of spa treatments are also available, using the natural properties of the local olives, almonds and algae. Experiences include gathering clams to baking bread to the harvesting and drying of fruits, catching a ride on a traditional boat, practice birdwatching, support the local nature reserve, and star gazing.

The DNA: Our door is always open to welcome those who arrive with the same joy with which we would run to our grandparents arms when we were little. Our grandfather, an “old sea dog”, Joaquim Modesto de Brito, known to all as “the champ”, was the foundation of this project. So many memories inhabit these walls and grounds that we, the grandchildren, couldn’t allow them to get lost. This is how Casa Modesta was born, combining rural tourism with a contemporary feel, manifested in nine rooms with private patios. There is also a garden with a section for organically grown vegetables and a solarium where time flows with the tides.
