Aman is scheduled to open the Aman New York in 2021. The property, located on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street by Central Park, will join Aman Tokyo as the brand’s second urban destination, and will be Aman’s third U.S. property after Amangiri and Amangani.
The hotel will take up the entire Crown Building (apart from the retail space on the first three floors) and will also house the first urban Aman Residences, a collection of 20 private homes. The Crown Building – formerly the first home of the Museum of Modern Art – will undergo a transformation by architect Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston that will see it fully restored to its original look.
Embodying the Gilded Age, the Crown Building was originally built in 1921. It is one of the fine examples of neo-classical Beaux-Arts architecture in the Big Apple. It will have 83 guestrooms and suites, three principal social dining venues, a spa, 19 private Aman Residences on the upper floors, plus a five-story, park-view penthouse at the building’s apex.
After arriving via a private entrance, guests’ first encounter of Aman New York will be its 10th-floor double-height Sky Lobby. Its textured ceiling panels in muted tones will hint at Asian influences in deference to Aman’s Asian roots.
The 83 guestrooms and suites start at 70m2 (750 square feet), each with a functioning fireplace. Design-wise, the rooms will have a pivoting door, which can be opened to integrate the fixtures and furnishings of the bathroom, should this be preferred.
Extending over three stories on the 7th, 8th and 9th floors, the Aman Spa will cover 2,000m2 (22,000 square feet). The centerpiece of this space will be its 25m (80-foot) indoor swimming pool, flanked by alcoves of double daybeds and fire pits. Two spa houses will have a double treatment room, sauna and steam rooms complemented by hot and cold plunge pools, and an outdoor terrace with cabana, daybed and fireplace.
The hotel’s dining venues will include fine-dining Japanese restaurant Nama, which will serve sushi and sashimi at its live-cooking counter and on its outdoor terrace, and signature Italian all-day dining restaurant Arva, which will feature a wraparound garden terrace with views of Central Park.
The hotel’s wine cellar The Wine Library will be located next door to Nama, and will be available for private wine tastings and events, while a separate bar will serve cocktails, craft beers and gins from leading local breweries and distilleries, and a global selection of fine wines. The hotel will also have a cigar bar with an alfresco terrace, and a subterranean jazz club.
All residences, some with outdoor terraces with heated pools, will be fully serviced by Aman.
