Mansion on Sutter | San Francisco

San Francisco’s most expensive listing on Airbnb is turning into a… hotel!

The historic Payne Mansion on 1409 Sutton Street in San Francisco’s Western Addition neighborhood is turning into a luxury boutique hotel. It was on the market for sale for several years and has been bought by a Californian entrepreneur who owns several hotels in California, like the Mirabelle Inn in Solvang.

The Payne Mansion has 10 guest rooms which were marketed through Airbnb at $10,000 a night (a $1,500 cleaning fee not included).  The Airbnb headquarters are located in San Francisco, so it is fun to see the business is turning into a traditional hospitality business (again).

The structure dates to 1881 and is on the National Registry of Historic Places and is an example of elaborate pre-1906 Victorian homes. It was built by Theodore Payne and its design is credited to famed Irish architect William F. Curlett.  The Paynes eventually moved away from the mansion to a new home on the Peninsula. Since their departure, the building has been a restaurant, hotel, offices and even served as a YMCA at one point.

The newly named Mansion on Sutter will have 16 rooms and an on-site bar and restaurant called “1881”. An opening is planned for July 2018.
