Flattered to be in Porto are beautiful self-catering apartments with hotel service. Located on the beach, yet in the city. The comfort of home, yet a totally different experience. In short, the best of both worlds.
On my travels I stayed at many hotels. Not the worst job as you can see on my websites. And even once in a while one I get across an amazing hotel. In the case of Flattered it is not really even a hotel, but self-catering apartments. Flattered in Porto is set in a renovated apartment building on the seaside promenade of Foz do Douro. It is where the river Douro flows into the Atlantic, some 5km downstream from the UNESCO World Heritage Site-listed old town of Porto. Here you have both the advantages of one of the nicest cties I have come across, and have the flair of a seaside resort too.
Foz nowadays is an affluent borough: you will see many nice houses in Art Deco and contemporary styles. It is also home to the Serralves, one of Portugal’s most famous museums of modern art. On Avenida Boa Vista, which borders the north of the borough, you will find the architecturally interesting, irregular shaped headoffice of Vodafone Portugal.
For architecture and design you do not have to go very far: just stay in your apartment. There are five to choose from. A ground-floor apartment was being finished when visiting (March 2013). This apartment plus two on the first and second floors at the back have ocean views. The other two apartments have street views. Bonus of the two penthouse apartments is the double height with a bedroom on the mezzanine. All apartments have a similar cool and minimalist style with unique designer and vintage furniture pieces. Art is on display and can be purchased. The apartments sleep up to five. A kingsize bed is set in a slightly raised ‘box’, a kind of contemporary cupboardbed. Concealed underneath is another kingsize bed, which can be pulled out. This is an excellent solution for couples travelling with children or for couples which are just not that close.
Each apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, which can also be concealed. There is even a washing machine and the cups and plates come from second hand markets, giving a homely feel to the place. Much better than standard 6 pieces of everything in the same series. Breakfast is included. You just mention the time you like to have it delivered (till noon) and you will find it, nicely packed and presented on your doorstep. Perfect for privacy and late sleeping.
The bathrooms are wonderful too. Completely clad in marble, they have walk-in showers and underfloor heating. Toiletries are by Claus, a traditional company from Porto itself, yet again totally hip.
If you can lure yourself away from your apartment (hard!) the busstop to downtown is almost in front of the building. A few minutes walk takes you to the stop of the historic tram which runs along the river.
