AthensWas Hotel

AthensWas

Located in the city centre of the Greek metropolis, and only steps from the Acropolis Museum, Parthenon, Dionysos Theatre and Syntagma (or Constitution) Square, AthensWas is a luxury design hotel set in a apartment building from 2006. The extensive use of Greek marble and walnut pays hommage to the Classic Modernism movement, popular in Greece from the 1950s to 1970s.

Spacious rooms come with large private balconies, a rarity in the city. Room facilities include a seating area, a flat-screen TV with cable and satellite channels, an iPod dock and a laptop safe. Bathroom includes either a bath or shower, slippers and a hairdryer.

The hotel also has a rooftop bar and restaurant with Acropolis views plus a fitness room.

The DNA: Like his work, nothing about Stavros Papayiannis is straightforward. Having initially studied Anatomic Pathology, the Greek maverick did a complete about-turn in 1988. Co-founding the multifaceted design studio DeArte, the completely self-taught designer took on interior design, graphic design, and art commissions before establishing his current company, Stage Design Office, where AthensWas and Anemi add to his growing collection of stunning boutique hotels in Athens and Folegandros Island, respectively. Renowned in Athens—where he still lives and works—he’s distinguished by his unique approach to design, likening the designer/client relationship to that of a patient and a doctor, no doubt a lingering hangover of his medical training.
