Carioca designer-turned-artist Oskar Metsavaht has been a champion of contemporary Brazilian cool ever since his now-global fashion brand Osklen encapsulated Ipanema’s storied sunshine scene into clothing.
Janeiro, Oskar’s first foray into hospitality, is an invitation into his world in the form of 53 ocean-view rooms that tower elegantly above Leblon’s sultry sands.
Modernist in structure, crafted from travertine marble and horizontal frames that throw summer shadows, architect Lia Siqueira’s sleek minimalism is warmed by natural highlights, from Brazilian freijó wood to rafia coccinelle-curved chairs and paintings from Oskar’s artist-sister Ana. Design books from his private collection scatter the first-floor restaurant, which serves up dishes such as peixe crudo and sustainably-grown grilled palmito (palm heart) from locally-sourced organic ingredients inline with the designer’s eco-conscious approach to life.
While the rooftop infinity pool won’t have you swimming laps, its intimate bar boasts stellar views to toast basil-infused mojitos with Oskar’s fashion crew as the beach below applauds yet another flaming sunset.
