(2) Fine Places To Stay: Vancouver

A converted motor hotel from 1956, The Burrard is a hip hotel located in Vancouver’s downtown. It is 3 blocks from the Robson Street shopping area and the beach can be reached in a 10-minute walk. Rooms come with air conditioning, a 42-inch flat-screen cable TV, a fridge, an alarm clock/docking station, a Nespresso machine, a minibar with free bottled water and free calls in North America. There is a seasonal outdoor lounge in the palm tree filled courtyard, an on-site coffee shop and Brodie cruiser bikes are available.

✅ free Wi-Fi • 72 rooms • parking possible on-site (charged) • pets allowed on request • 24-hour front desk

With 188 rooms, The Douglas might be pushing the boutique term but it does over the style associated with it. To get to the reception guests must walk past a luscious living wall and take a lift that has a trippy light installation that doubles as a mirror. The reception itself is made from the trunk of a Douglas fir, which was once central to the British Columbian economy and gives the hotel its name. The hotel is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, like its sister hotel, the JW Marriott in the same Parq entertainment complex which also holds a casino.
