district: Baixa, Alfama
Utterly charming, this elegant hotel was once a 19th-century aristocratic family home. Palacete Chafariz d’el Rei is full of original details: stained-glass windows, antique furniture, and stuccoed ceilings. Other highlights include a wood-paneled library and a terrace overlooking the Tagus River.
The hotel is located between Lisbon’s Santa Apólonia train station and the Baixa (downtown) along the Tagus River. The São Jorge castle is a 10-minute walk upwards through the Alfama district.
There are only 6 guest suites which fuse retro and (Brazilian) Art Nouveau (very much en vogue at the turn of the 20th century), Neo-Baroque and Neoclassical details.
Breakfast and brunch is served daily in the restored dining room which overlooks the terraced gardens.
