Vibe: These stylish Lisbon apartments fuse Swedish ‘lagom’ – just the right amount – with Portuguese design sensibility.
Area: hip Santos & historic Alfama
Hermitage Castelo is a set of two equally stylish apartments buildings, one located in Lisbon‘s design district Santos and another within the walls of the São Jorge castle on top of one of the Portuguese capital’s seven hills. The apartments blend elements of Nordic and Portuguese design styles, with a minimalist feel while retaining the authenticity of the original buildings. All apartments are bright and comfortable, without being packed full of things or decorations. A perfect solution for individualists pur-sang, who can come and go any time they want and take advantage of self catering or discover a wealth of restaurants at the doorstep. A detailed welcome guide is available in the apartments, with the hosts being an email or phone call away to get in touch.
The Santos location, known as Casa Chafariz has a striking, cherry-red façade. The historic building takes its name from the adjacent to the Chafariz da Esperança, a public fountain that dates to 1760 and was classified as a Portuguese national monument in 1910. Santos is known as Lisbon’s design district and is also home to a large number of restaurants, shops and a local market. The Tagus River (which can be viewed from some of the apartments) is a short stroll away. The 5 apartments are distributed over four floors and have bright, homely interiors with modern furnishings and heritage details; expect stucco ceilings and exposed beams. With th renovation comes insulation between floors as well as double glass windows. Apartments range from a one bedroom sleeping 2 adults to a two bedroom apartment sleeping up to 6 adults plus a child. All come with a fully-equipped, monochrome marble kitchen with a stove, fridge, freezer, coffee maker, toaster and kettle. A French-style breakfast can be delivered on request to the door each morning, consisting of croissants, pain au chocolat, orange juice and coffee/tea. There is even a dishwasher, iron and ironing board while two apartments also have a washing machine.
Casa Saint Jorge has been refurbished with equal amounts of love and attention to detail. It is located within the citadel of Saint George’s Castle, in the very heart of Lisbon, on the top of Alfama and Baixa. Adjacent is the Miradouro do Recolhimento, a public garden with one of the most impressive views of Lisbon. The 7 apartments are spread over four floors, and each has been renovated with maximum care and flair. Cosy and light, the walls are painted with Farrow & Ball, bathing the spaces in shades of yellow and blue-green. The downstairs apartments have a private patio and sleep while upper floor units sleep four and come with Tagus River views. All offer nights of absolute silence. Smart marble-clad kitchenettes and full kitchens feature cooking utensils, a dishwasher, electric stove, microwave, fridge freezer, coffee machine and toaster, so you’re well-equipped to self-cater.
