Guests are invited to connect with their senses at Casa Hormiga, an 18 room sanctuary in Quintana Roo’s lesser known town of Bacalar. Created to foster renewal, healing, and a deeper connection with the oneself, the design-forward jungle retreat combines a sophisticated laidback vibe with sumptuous accommodation.
Located on the Yucatán Peninsula in Bacalar, close to the Belize border and known for Lake Bacalar (also called the Lagoon of Seven Colours due to its blue and turquoise hues), the town attracts travellers looking to venture ‘off-grid’, disconnecting from the everyday life and plugging into the energy that this small-town with its striking lake provides in abundance.
Back at the hotel, rooms range from Jungle Twin and Double to Tree Top Lofts, boasting high ceilings and traditional palapa roofs, a private terrace with views over the tropical gardens or pool, and a separate sitting area with sustainable bathroom amenities.
Guests can convene in a variety of public spaces from The Nest, a place where workshops, exhibitions and discussion groups rotated alongside movie nights and yoga classes, to the swimming pool and beach club, the former located on the shore of the seven colours lagoon. At Brote, the hotel’s peaceful restaurant, open for breakfast and dinner, expect gastronomy that reveals a love for travelling, culture and exploration.
The heart of the Casa is undoubtedly the Library, a beautiful spot to enjoy a read from a range of subjects including art, photography, architecture, travelling, culture and history, and a perhaps play a board game whilst connecting with likeminded folk.
A slice of paradise in the Southern Yucatan, Casa Hormiga values tradition, pleasure and simplicity, but offers much, much, more. An astounding project with serious design chops, it’s a Tulum-shaped awakening for this lesser-known gem of Mexico‘s magical Quintana Roo.
