The Vibe: Gazing all day.
The Area: Casa Kimiyà is located in the old town of Modica, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is no museum though, with endless festas and a jazz festival in July; lovely beaches are just 20 minutes away.
The DNA: Kimiyá, from the Arab word for alchemy, is a fascinating artist’s abode dating back to the early 20th century, with an enchanting view over Modica, a jewel of the Sicilian Baroque. During the 1960s and 70s the building had undergone transformations which totally ruined its authentic character. The renovation project aimed at restoring original features and improving the peculiarities of the space, first of all the spectacular view which amazingly awaits anyone going in and makes him feel as magically suspended over the town. The eclectic interior design, marked by the combination of warm white and earth tones with red elements and the dark brown of the pitch-stone, features a mix of contemporary materials, artworks, re-used furniture and memorabilia: the bookcase made of wood pallets, the bedside tables made of cornices salvaged from aristocratic palaces, the ancient Sicilian polychrome-majolica for the headboard of the bed, the 19th century chest of drawers, and the carpets from Oman.
Suite-Me-Up: The whole place is yours, including a unique, fully equipped living-kitchen space connected to the balcony, which has a plexiglass table for aperitifs with views over the town, from the cathedral of S. Giorgio, the old jewish quarter of Cartellone up to the Castle of the Counts. There are 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, linked by a former staircase tiled with ancient pitch-stone. The larger bedroom connects to a secluded panoramic rooftop terrace, with a dining table and relaxing chairs. And ah, did we mention the views?
