Baixa House | Lisbon

The Vibe: Your own private apartment with the service of a a boutique hotel.

The Area: Bang in the centre of Lisbon’s Baixa (Lower Downtown), right on the route of the electric tram No. 28. For first time visitors and those who have already fallen for the charms of the Portuguese capital, its is exceptionally situated:  just a 5-minute walk from Praça do Comercio, Alfama and Rossio, and 10 minutes from Chiado and the Bairro Alto.

Baixa House provides a singular type of accommodation: serviced apartments including daily cleaning, breakfast and the icing on the cake: permanent support by super friendly staff to satisfy any need – like in a boutique hotel.

The DNA: Anabela Bartolo, the manager of Baixa House, is a curious and savvy traveller who knows Portugal inside out. She takes true pleasure in discovering Lisbon’s trends, the old and the new, and is always available to share her insights. Speaking 5 languages makes it so easy. She personally is in charge of the small details: going to the local flower shop and choose your fresh flowers, buying the bread, making yoghurt or testing the new recipes for the homemade cake. Owner Jesus Moraime spent years meticulously restoring the stunning 18th-century building’s original features including wooden floors, tiles, window frames, doors or ceiling beams, and scouring vintage shops in Portugal and Spain for quirky furnishings. The result is a fantastic mismatch of old and new.

Suite-Me-Up: In the boho chic, spacious 13 apartments, spread across 5 floors, – named after Lisbon parks – the theme “garden“ runs like a red thread through the interior design: in the form of wallpaper with colourful flowers, paintings and photos or vintage outdoor furniture. White minimalist spaces are given unique style with one-off pieces and reclaimed furniture, offering a homely feel. Choose between one, two or three bedrooms sleeping 1-7 persons. Each apartment has a well-equipped kitchen, some with dishwashers and all with a fridge-freezer, oven, hob, and even a blender. There are espresso machines, percolators, kettles and toasters, too. Oil, vinegar and salt are provided, and you’ll find coffee, tea, hot chocolate and sugar in the cupboards. Rooms facing the street can be noisy, for light sleepers we advice the apartments on the rear.

Breakfast, a homemade cake and daily cleaning are included in the price, which is unusual for city self-catering. Fresh bread is delivered to your door every morning; everything else waits in your fridge – perfect to set your own pace. If you do not wish to cook yourself, Baixa House too is a perfect base for exploring Lisbon’s buzzy restaurants all around.
