Casa Fortunato | Lisbon

The Vibe: A beauteous retreat of apparent heritage paired with a playful, imaginative style narrative of considered design and heirloom nostalgia.

The Area: Upscale Amoreiras, right in the centre of Lisbon, round the corner from the landmark Ritz Four Seasons Hotel. It is five minutes’ walk to the designer shops of Avenida Liberdade and a 20-minute stroll down to the waterfront and the capital’s magnificent Praça do Comércio. Lisbon airport is a 15-minute taxi ride away.

The DNA: Previously the offices of architect António Costa Lopes, Casa Fortunato is a labour of love for him and his wife Filipa, who followed their dream to transform it not only into a family home for them, their four children and their black Labrador Cocoa, but into a place for like-minded visitors to rest their heads. They took the plunge in 2018, and haven’t looked back since. The elegantly curved 19th-century white façade, graced with a charming wrought iron balcony, belies the world of colour inside. In the kitchen, the in-house chef serves up a wholesome macrobiotic menu – think white miso soup and scrambled tofu for breakfast – which is best devoured in the huge, art-filled salon. Yoga is on offer daily as is the warmth of family life.

Suite-Me-Up: The bedrooms – Big, Bigger and Biggest – are a riotous blend of period architecture, like ornate mouldings and traditional architraves, and contemporary details such as the colourful handmade Moroccan rugs, that rest on stripped pine flooring; a mix of mid-century and modern furnishings; and, most notably, head-turning, geometric Jupiter 10 wallpapers that are boosted further by bold Farrow & Ball hues. Floor-to-ceiling windows bathe the spaces in natural light, while framing leafy street views, and indulgent bathrooms – some with large soaking tubs – come complete with Diptyque amenities.
