The Vibe: An extraordinary Art Nouveau building.
The Area: In a residential area, a 3-minute walk from Marques Metro Station and a 10-minute walk to the city centre.
The DNA: Built by a textile industrialist as a private family house, and as a place to entertain his guests and demonstrate his social and economic power. By 1969, the Castelo Santa Catarina stood abandoned for several decades. Hotel entrepreneur Joaquim Teixeira Brás saw the opportunity to turn it into a hotel and bought it. In 1974 Joaquim, alongside his son João, opened the castelo as a residencial. In recognition for the work in the preservation and adaptation of a place so full of history, the City of Porto classified the Castelo of Santa Catarina as a building of patrimonial and architectural interest. João has taken over after the dead of his father and with the constant requalification makes the hotel what it is today: one of Porto‘s most emblematic (and visible) buildings and surrounded by landscaped gardens and clad in azulejos (Portuguese tiles). A complimentary breakfast is served in the impressive dining room or outside on the terrace shaded by the palm trees. A bar service is available during the day and evening. In the midst of the manicured gardens lies a chapel in honor of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, Queen and Patron of Portugal.
Suite-Me-Up: The 20 rooms and suites are distributed between the original tower (classic) and a newer built garden annex (modern). Early 20th-century Belle Epoque decorations including ornate chest drawers, large beds with carved headboards and hand painted ceilings. Most rooms feature a private balcony or terrace, some overlooking the Mediterranean garden and some with scenic city views towards the ocean. Room facilities include air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities and a private bathroom with a hairdryer and complimentary amenities. Room service is available. Please note there is no lift and most rooms can be accessed by stairs only.
