The DNA: Hotel Oderberger occupies a beautiful listed bathhouse, the ‘Stadtbad Oderberger’ It was designed in 1898 by architect Ludwig Hoffmann (who also worked on the Pergamon Museum) as a place of leisure for local workers. It survived the war, the building was saved by a citizens’ initiative, and the hotel was opened in 2016 by a private company who pledged to preserve as much of the original building as possible and reopen the pool to the public. Hence guests will find original staircase banisters, inner walls and even old doors protected in glass, as well as tasteful contemporary art (paintings, photos) that create a savvy fusion of new and old. The Restaurant Oderberger, a three-level space with impressively high ceilings, occupies what used to be the building’s energy centre. Floral displays are blended with rusted original equipment (old thermometers, protruding girders) while the menu specialises in modern and seasonal German cuisine with local influences from Berlin and Brandenburg — pork knuckle, beef fillet and risottos — paired with selected German wines.
