L’AND Vineyards | Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal

The Vibe: Modernist Moorish.

The Area: The hotel is located in rural Alentejo countryside, surrounded by vineyards and bordering a lake, across which lies the medieval hill top town of Montemor-o-Novo. The magnificent Roman remains in Évora are approximately a 15-minute drive, Lisbon city centre is around 45 minutes away and Lisbon Airport is just under an hour away by car.

The DNA: A spectacular wine resort, L’AND blends 21st-century design with the deep-rooted wine growing traditions of the Alentejo. An impressive winery, an organic spa, a regionally-inspired and a restaurant by culinary master José Miguel Tapadejo, plus attentive service all add to the resort’s undeniable uniqueness. The cluster of whitewashed, low-lying buildings features interiors which draw on the local handcrafts – hand-woven striped rugs from nearby Monsaraz, black slate floors and eucalyptus wood – to create a real sense of place. Design elements are also one of the pillars here with void lights by Tom Dixon, chairs by John Serodio and bespoke wooden pieces by George Nakashima.

Suite-Me-Up: The state-of-the-art suites are set in low-slung, white modernist buildings built in natural stone and local wood. They are divided between sky view suites and land view suites. The sky view suites have retractable roofs allowing you to sleep under the star-filled, clear night skies of the Alentejo. They open out onto panoramic patios with outdoor fireplaces and some with plunge pools. Oversized bathrooms come with tubs crafted in slate. Bedrooms draw on raw textiles and slatted wooden walls. All suites have Nespresso machines and underfloor heating.
