Hotel Peter & Paul | New Orleans

Hotel Peter & Paul | New Orleans

The Vibe: Ecclesiastical chic.

The Area: Marigny, equally historic as the French Quarter albeit more residential. Many guests will like the tasteful distance between the hotel and the clamour of downtown.

The DNA: Hotel Peter & Paul is an elegant property that consists of four separate buildings – a church, rectory, schoolhouse and convent – all dating back to the 19th century. Interiors are inspired by iconic religious paintings and tapestries from the 14th to 18th centuries in Europe and Africa: a textural pastiche of gingham print, antique chandeliers, custom-designed rugs that have been made in India, along with quirky accents such as sculpted hand-shaped light sconces and trompe l’oeil murals. Together with the building’s original features, which include cypress wood mouldings, marble fireplaces, wainscoted corridors and soaring floor-to-ceiling French windows, the hotel is an evocative mix of old and new that perfectly encapsulates the magic and myth, which runs through the city. The church is used as an event space, while the rectory is home to The Elysian Bar, which offers niche wines and signature cocktails, alongside a menu of small plates made from local ingredients.

Suite-Me-Up: Rooms are located in the schoolhouse and convent and come in a wide variety of styles, from cosy attic spaces to more opulent options. One School House Grand Loft has a pastoral feel, emphasised by the gingham furnishings. The bed is located on its own mezzanine floor, and there are some welcome touches, including a steamer instead of an iron for clothing and a fabric cover for the television screen. The striped-tile shower adds to the farmhouse look, but crosses and religious iconography ground you once again in the building.
