The Vibe: Kelly Wearstler’s hotchpotch of classic and modern styles, clashing patterns and found furniture, bold fabrics and wacky wallpaper.

The Area: Mid-Market, a gradually regenerating part of downtown Market Street. Here, vintage street cars and Roaring Twenties façades mingle with start-up offices and the city’s seedier side. Transport options are excellent: BART Civic Center Station is a 1-minute walk.

The DNA: San Francisco Proper is set in an iconic flatiron building from 1904 with boldly designed interiors, a restaurant, a cafe and a destination rooftop cocktail bar and lounge. Wearstler has a knack for pulling off impossible styles – staff wear checkered suits with striped shirts and floral ties – so it somehow works: fashionable, fresh and, fundamentally, fun.

Suite-Me-Up: There might be more style than space (hardwood floors, angular lamps, four types of wallpaper), but rooms are thoughtfully outfitted. Of the hotel’s 131 rooms, 11 are suites, and 12 are ‘Bunk rooms’. Tucked into the awkward spaces at the ‘nose’ of the Flat Iron, the latter offer bunk beds and lower rates.
