Sanders | Copenhagen

The Vibe: A luxury small hotel in townhouse-style, Sanders blurs the lines between a traditional boutique hotel and a more residential setting.

The Area: Close to Kings’s New Square and picturesque Nyhavn, at the axis of cultural heritage and the royal alchemy of Copenhagen, with notable neighbours as: The Opera House, Charlottenborg Palace (Kunsthal Charlottenborg) and Amalienborg Palace – museum and present Royal residence. Kongens Nytorv metro station is a 5-minute walk (direct connection with the airport).

The DNA: Set in a classical Jugendstil building, dating back to 1869, with a façade freshly coated in signature Copenhagen green, interiors are an eclectic mix of styles: Danish mid-century modern (bespoke furniture), colonial chic (wickerwork here and there, plus potted plants) and a dash of theatrical drama (velvet drapes at the entrance, a rare Murano chandelier in the living room). Which all comes natural to owner and creator, and celebrated Danish ballet dancer Alexander Kølpin. Specially commissioned artwork by emerging artists adorn the walls of public spaces and rooms. Eating at Sanders is an intimate and low-key affair with a crisp street-side eatery with a cute walled garden. The retro-glamorous TATA cocktail lounge faces the stage doors of the Royal Danish Theatre (Kølpin’s former employer) across the street. Breakfast is served at the Conservatory – a partially covered rooftop garden.

Suite-Me-Up: The 54 beautifully handsome rooms and suites (down from 90 in the original hotel) share the same design values as the rest of the hotel: bespoke wooden furniture, leather-upholstered armchairs, rattan cane-couches, brass fittings, plush fabrics and tastefully earthy paint shades. They come in a range of categories, from a Coupé sized snug room inspired by elegant train travels of yesteryear to a generous apartment with dining area and kitchenette.
