The Area: Removed from the tourist track, this corner of southeastern China is a well-kept secret, where original structures and Hakka culture await. Taxia Village, located in this UNESCO-listed region, dates back some 600 years and includes many well-preserved, original tulou (traditional Fujian buildings) buildings.
The DNA: Located in the mountainous interior of Fujian province, Tsingpu Tulou Retreat is a luxury boutique hotel comprising five classical tulou structures, which were family homes for the best part of two centuries before they were transformed into a unique hotel. Three of these buildings were constructed during the latter part of the Qing dynasty which an exterior that seems untouched by time, retaining the ancient rammed-earth and wooden-architecture style, as well as artistic decorations from the region. Within the buildings, green slate, warm wood, and Chinese fir unite, while columns and beams from ancient neighboring structures were used for the renovation, highlighting traditional craftsmanship. Roaming around the hotel, you’ll spot artworks by Zhao Yi Qian and Li Mu Zi, two homegrown artists who’ve garnered international acclaim for their paintings. Welcoming open spaces connect an interior courtyard in each of the tulou buildings. There is a restaurant showcasing Hakka food (all meals and drinks – including local beer – are inclusive in the rate) using fresh, organic ingredients in seasonal menus. The hotel offers a number of experiences (also included in the rate), like handicraft workshops, a cooking studio, a yoga studio, citrus tea-making, Zhangzhou porcelain pottery makling, as well as exploring the surrounding hills in search of harvesting the local delicacy of fresh bamboo shoots.
