Above the Atlantic

There are sea-view hotels, and then there are hotels where the sea seems to consume almost everything else. Aethos Ericeira belongs firmly to the latter. Opened in 2022 on a cliff above Portugal’s Atlantic coast, the 50-room retreat sits just outside Ericeira, the fishing town turned international surf destination less than an hour north of Lisbon. From up here, the landscape is wonderfully uncomplicated: cliffs, sky, ocean. The hotel wisely doesn’t try to compete.

From Existing Hotel to Coastal Retreat

Rather than starting from scratch, Aethos reworked an existing property, with Portuguese architect Luís Pedra Silva responsible for the architectural transformation and Barcelona-based Astet Studio shaping the interiors. The original building has been stripped of much of its conventional resort character and given a calmer, more elemental identity. Creamy stone, textured plaster, pale woods, woven fibres, and large expanses of glass establish an immediate relationship with the surrounding landscape. Curves soften the architecture, while furniture and objects have a pleasingly sculptural quality. The palette rarely strays far from sand, stone, chalk, and timber. Then the Atlantic supplies the colour.

Designed Around the View

Inside, Astet resisted the temptation to turn coastal living into a collection of nautical clichés. Instead, the spaces feel warm, contemporary, and distinctly Mediterranean in spirit. Bouclé upholstery, chunky timber tables, ceramics, linen, and hand-finished surfaces create rooms that invite touching as much as looking. Large windows continually pull your attention outside. That relationship becomes particularly powerful in the communal spaces, where seating is arranged towards the horizon rather than inward towards the hotel. It is a simple decision that says almost everything about Aethos Ericeira.

50 Rooms, Plenty of Space

The same restraint continues through the guestrooms and suites. Natural materials, organic textiles, muted colours, and uncomplicated furniture create spaces designed to decompress rather than impress. Many open onto balconies or terraces overlooking the Atlantic, while larger configurations make Aethos unusually workable for families too. Nothing is particularly loud. And that’s precisely the point. After a day spent in the wind and waves, the rooms provide the architectural equivalent of lowering the volume.

Surf, Swim, Repeat

Ericeira was Europe’s first World Surfing Reserve, so surfing here isn’t an activity invented by the hotel marketing department. It’s part of the place. Aethos can arrange lessons and sessions along the surrounding coast, while yoga, cycling, and hikes offer gentler ways to engage with the landscape. Back at the hotel, the heated saltwater pool occupies one of the property’s most seductive positions, seemingly suspended between the cliffs and ocean. There is also a sauna and treatment space, but wellness at Aethos feels broader than a spa menu. Fresh air, movement, sleep, good food, and enough empty space to do absolutely nothing are arguably the more important ingredients.

Onda and the Portuguese Coast

Onda keeps the restaurant similarly rooted in its surroundings. Fish and seafood naturally play starring roles, alongside seasonal vegetables and produce sourced from the region. Portuguese flavours provide the foundation rather than a decorative reference, interpreted with the lighter, contemporary approach that suits the hotel. On sunny days, tables spill outside. With the Atlantic immediately beyond, elaborate culinary theatre would feel rather unnecessary.

Why It Works

Aethos Ericeira succeeds because it understands that its greatest luxury was already here. Astet and Luís Pedra Silva created an architectural framework for experiencing the cliffs, ocean, wind, and extraordinary Atlantic light rather than attempting to overshadow them.
