A Warehouse with a Second Life

In Porto’s historic Largo de São Domingos, Armazém tells a story of reinvention. When owner Fernanda Gramaxo acquired the abandoned nineteenth-century warehouse, its future was far from obvious. Together with local architecture studio Pedra Líquida, she transformed the industrial structure into a boutique hotel that embraces its past rather than concealing it. Original masonry, ironwork, and structural elements remain visible throughout, allowing the building’s history to shape every space. Nothing has been polished away. Character takes precedence.

Industrial, Without the Clichés

The design language is deliberately restrained. Exposed stone walls, weathered steel, polished concrete ceilings, raw timber, and soft grey tones establish an atmosphere that feels authentic rather than manufactured. Warm materials, tactile fabrics, and bespoke furniture soften the industrial architecture without compromising its honesty, while custom storage solutions respond to the building’s irregular geometry. It feels robust. Yet quietly elegant.

Nine Rooms, Nine Stories

No two guestrooms are alike. The original warehouse dictated their proportions, resulting in unexpected layouts, generous volumes, and distinctive architectural features. Bespoke furnishings, Portuguese-made mattresses, large walk-in showers, and carefully selected textiles introduce comfort while allowing the historic fabric to remain the visual focus. Several suites include freestanding bathtubs and separate living spaces, while three neighbouring apartments extend the concept with mezzanine layouts, compact kitchens, and a more residential atmosphere. The architecture leads. The interiors simply follow.

Designed for the City

Armazém intentionally keeps things uncomplicated. There is no formal restaurant, encouraging guests to discover Porto’s cafés, wine bars, and restaurants just beyond the front door. Breakfast focuses on fresh regional products, while evenings often begin with a glass of Port or local wine on the rooftop terrace, overlooking Clérigos Tower, São Domingos Square, Misericórdia Church, and the city’s remarkable skyline. The hotel never tries to contain Porto. It invites you into it.

In the Heart of Historic Porto

Located just off Rua das Flores within Porto’s UNESCO-listed historic centre, Armazém places the Douro River, Sé Cathedral, Ferreira Borges Market, independent boutiques, galleries, and many of the city’s finest restaurants within easy walking distance. The neighbourhood feels authentic. The hotel belongs naturally within it.
