The DNA of the Cyclades

Where Whitewashed Tradition Meets a New Aegean Modernism

The Cyclades may share the same brilliant light and deep-blue Aegean, but each island has its own rhythm. Santorini’s volcanic cliffs, the granite landscapes of Tinos, the quiet drama of Folegandros and the energy of Mykonos create very different settings for architecture and hospitality. The familiar language of whitewashed walls, stone terraces and sheltered courtyards remains, yet some of Greece’s most interesting architects are now reinterpreting Cycladic tradition through sculptural forms, raw local materials and buildings designed to disappear into the landscape.

Food and drink are just as rooted in the islands. Seafood, wild herbs, local cheeses, capers and sun-ripened vegetables shape menus that change subtly from island to island, while Santorini’s volcanic vineyards produce some of Greece’s most distinctive wines. Simple seaside tavernas remain essential, but they now coexist with ambitious restaurants, contemporary Greek cooking and beautifully designed bars where the sunset is only part of the attraction.

The Cyclades are particularly rich territory for DNA Hotels. Restored village houses, secluded hideaways and contemporary retreats carved into hillsides offer an alternative to conventional island resorts, often placing architecture and landscape at the centre of the experience. We curate the places where design, food and a genuine connection to island life come together—hotels that prove there are many more ways to experience the Cyclades than white walls and an infinity pool.
