The Stay
An immersive jungle retreat where Mexican modernism, Japanese restraint, and regenerative hospitality meet on the shores of Bacalar's Lagoon of Seven Colours.
Hidden among the tropical forest on the shores of Bacalar Lagoon, La Valise Bacalar was conceived as more than a boutique hotel. Founder Rodrigo Juarez envisioned a place where hospitality could actively contribute to both environmental conservation and personal wellbeing, inspired by his own belief in nature’s restorative power. The result is a low-density retreat that encourages guests to disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with the rhythms of the Caribbean jungle.
Architecture That Disappears into Nature
Designed by acclaimed Mexican architect Frida Escobedo, La Valise demonstrates how architecture can exist in harmony with its surroundings rather than dominate them. The elevated treehouse-style villas rest lightly above the forest floor, allowing wildlife to move freely beneath while minimizing the project’s ecological footprint. Escobedo’s signature latticework filters sunlight, encourages natural ventilation, and creates constantly shifting patterns of light and shadow throughout the day. Constructed using timber, concrete, and local building techniques, the architecture feels simultaneously contemporary and deeply rooted in place.
Treehouses for Modern Living
The twenty-six villas, including twenty-two spacious suites, offer complete privacy within the jungle canopy. Warm timber interiors, handcrafted furniture, earthy colours, and carefully curated pieces by Mexican designers and local artisans create spaces that feel refined without excess. Upcycled materials, custom ceramics, woven textiles, and Japanese-inspired simplicity blend naturally with expansive terraces overlooking either the lagoon or the surrounding forest. Here, the jungle becomes the artwork.
Community at the Heart
While the villas provide peaceful seclusion, the communal spaces bring guests together. Light-filled walkways connect the accommodation with the central pool, spa, lagoon deck, restaurants, and gathering spaces that gently emerge from the surrounding vegetation. Rather than separating guests from the landscape, every path, platform, and pavilion invites constant interaction with nature. The atmosphere is social without ever disturbing the prevailing sense of tranquillity.
Food Inspired by Place
La Valise Bacalar’s signature restaurant reflects Namron’s broader philosophy of creating restaurants that feel deeply connected to their destination. It emphasizes local ingredients, regional producers and a strong sense of place that complements the hotel’s architecture and natural surroundings while also appealing to the wider Bacalar community.
Wellbeing Through Nature
Wellness at Boca de Agua is inseparable from its setting. The spa is nestled beneath four sacred chaká trees, while a cenote-inspired pool, in-room treatments, and quiet spaces for reflection allow guests to experience nature as therapy. Every aspect of the property has been designed to encourage slower movement, deeper breathing, and a greater awareness of the surrounding environment. It’s a form of wellbeing rooted in place rather than routine.
Why it Works
La Valise Bacalar represents a new generation of hospitality—one where remarkable architecture, environmental responsibility, and emotional wellbeing exist in perfect balance. Frida Escobedo’s elegant design allows the jungle to remain the true protagonist, creating an experience that feels both deeply contemporary and profoundly connected to nature. Quietly visionary, beautifully crafted, and impossible to forget, it is one of Mexico’s most inspiring design hotels.
