A House with a Story

Hidden between Kolonaki and Exarchia, Monsieur Didot feels less like a hotel than a private Athenian residence. Built in 1890, the neoclassical townhouse was meticulously restored by BaBatchas Design Studio with the lightest possible architectural intervention. Its name pays tribute to Ambroise Firmin Didot, the French typographer and philhellene whose family’s contribution to Greek publishing forms a symbolic link between Athens’ intellectual past and its creative present. The building celebrates history without becoming nostalgic.

Restoration with Restraint

Original marble fireplaces, parquet floors, carved ceilings, shuttered windows, and the restored stone balcony remain central to the house. Alongside these historic features, bespoke furniture, handmade ceramics, contemporary lighting, polished concrete bathrooms, and subtle colour palettes introduce a modern layer that feels entirely natural. Bookshelves, paintings, vintage objects, and hidden doors reinforce the impression of entering the home of a well-travelled collector. Every room invites discovery. Nothing feels predictable.

Six Rooms, Six Personalities

With only six rooms and suites, every stay feels highly personal. Each accommodation carries its own literary-inspired name and distinctive character. Some feature marble fireplaces, others private balconies, hidden passages, rooftop terraces, or floor-to-ceiling bookcases concealing secret doors. Throughout, high ceilings and generous proportions preserve the grandeur of the original residence. Luxury remains discreet. Character always comes first.

Living Like an Athenian

Rather than creating a self-contained hotel, the founders wanted guests to become part of the surrounding neighbourhood. Breakfast is served in-room using carefully selected Greek produce, or enjoyed on the rooftop terrace overlooking the city. Beyond that, the hosts encourage guests to discover nearby bookshops, galleries, cafés, wine bars, and restaurants, sharing local knowledge that reaches far beyond the guidebooks.
