Pritzker Prize-winning architect Álvaro Siza Vieira approached the renovation with characteristic restraint, preserving the elegant proportions of the original Art Nouveau building while introducing a minimalist contemporary extension. Unlike many of Siza’s celebrated white buildings, the spa retains its original warm pink exterior, allowing old and new architecture to read as one continuous composition. Inside, simplicity replaces ornament. Natural light, calm geometry, and carefully proportioned spaces create an atmosphere that feels restorative before any treatment even begins. The wellness facilities include thermal pools, hammam, sauna, Vichy shower, treatment rooms, and access to the mineral waters that made Pedras Salgadas famous.

Architecture Among the Trees

The accommodation is unlike anything else in Portugal. Architect Luís Rebelo de Andrade designed twelve prefabricated Eco Houses that sit lightly within the forest, each carefully positioned to minimise disturbance to the century-old woodland. Built from timber, slate, and natural materials, the houses are subtly rotated according to their location, ensuring privacy while framing different views of the surrounding landscape. Large windows, skylights, terraces, and generous glazing constantly reconnect guests with the forest. The buildings feel temporary. The trees feel permanent. Exactly as intended.

The Tree Snake Houses

The park’s most recognisable structures are the remarkable Tree Snake Houses. Rather than being suspended from trees, these elongated timber-and-slate buildings glide between them, supported on slender stilts where the terrain falls away. Their gently curving form, inspired by the movement of a snake, gives them an almost living presence within the forest. A narrow bridge leads inside to compact, beautifully minimal interiors containing a sleeping area, kitchenette, bathroom, and generous windows looking directly into the canopy. One skylight sits above the bed, allowing guests to fall asleep beneath the stars. It is one of Portugal’s most memorable architectural stays.

Designed Around Nature

Everything about Pedras Salgadas encourages a slower rhythm. Walking paths meander through the park instead of cutting across it. The architecture follows the existing topography.
