Why DNA Hotels loves it

A 1907 private residence turned intimate boutique hotel, preserving the scale, atmosphere and architectural character of a Düsseldorf villa.

Richly layered interiors of dark timber, leather, antiques, artwork, plants and deep colours feel collected over generations rather than conceived by a hospitality design studio.

Its quiet residential setting in the leafy Zooviertel offers a very different Düsseldorf from the polished modernity of the city centre.

The Stay

A 1907 residential villa where dark woods, saturated colour and Victorian eccentricity create the feeling of staying in a beautifully collected private home.

Villa Achenbach began life in 1907 as a private residence, long before anyone thought of turning historic houses into boutique hotels. After the Second World War it entered hospitality, eventually evolving into the distinctive small hotel it is today. Its residential origins remain fundamental to the experience. This is not a grand hotel compressed into a smaller building, but a genuine urban villa whose rooms, corridors, garden and terrace retain the intimacy of a private home. An extensive restoration between 2008 and 2012 preserved that character rather than attempting to reinvent it.

More Collected Than Designed

Calling Villa Achenbach a design hotel would almost miss the point. Its appeal comes from an interior that appears to have accumulated rather than been installed. Dark woods, leather armchairs, patterned fabrics, period furniture, artwork, plants and decorative objects fill rooms painted in deep, saturated colours. There is something unmistakably Victorian and slightly English about it all — part gentleman’s residence, part collector’s house, with just enough eccentricity to keep things interesting. Nothing looks as though it arrived on a single furniture order.

Every Room Has Its Own Story

The guestrooms continue this highly individual approach. Rather than repeating a standard scheme, each combines its own furniture, artwork, textiles, plants and handcrafted decorative details. Contemporary bathrooms and practical comforts sit behind the historic atmosphere, but the visual language remains resolutely old-world. Some rooms are restrained, others considerably more theatrical. Together they create the kind of variety that only really works in a small hotel where individuality is more important than consistency.

Leather Chairs and Garden Evenings

There is no destination restaurant or elaborate collection of public spaces. Breakfast is the main culinary event, while the hotel’s intimate bar, with its deep leather armchairs, feels entirely appropriate to the building. In summer, life extends onto the terrace and into the garden. That greenery adds another layer to the private-house feeling: despite being in one of Germany’s major cities, Villa Achenbach can feel remarkably removed from urban Düsseldorf.

The Other Düsseldorf

The setting reinforces that sense of retreat. Villa Achenbach sits on a quiet residential street in the leafy Zooviertel, an area characterised by handsome historic villas, mature trees and carefully preserved architecture. The city centre and Königsallee are easily reached by tram, yet staying here reveals a quieter side of Düsseldorf. Flingern and the surrounding neighbourhood provide cafés and restaurants without the hotel needing to manufacture an entire lifestyle ecosystem within its own walls.

A Hotel That Was Never Designed to Be One

Villa Achenbach’s greatest strength is precisely that it doesn’t feel conceived as a hotel. The architecture came first, followed by more than a century of history, adaptation and accumulated character. There are no fashionable design gestures demanding attention and no carefully engineered boutique-hotel aesthetic. Instead, there is an old Düsseldorf villa filled with dark timber, art, plants, antiques and wonderfully comfortable leather chairs. In an age when hotels increasingly try to look like private homes, Villa Achenbach has a considerable advantage: it already is one.
