Some hotels are designed to separate you from the city. Volkshaus was created to bring people together. Rather than turning Volkshaus into a private luxury retreat, Herzog & de Meuron revived its original purpose, creating a hotel that still feels like Basel’s living room.

Herzog & de Meuron, at Home

For the Basel-based architects, this was a particularly personal commission. Instead of imposing a completely new vision, they carefully stripped away decades of alterations to rediscover the clarity of the 1925 building beneath. Original proportions, circulation, and architectural rhythm became the foundation for an entirely contemporary interpretation. The result never feels nostalgic. Nor does it feel aggressively modern. Instead, it possesses the quiet confidence that defines much of Herzog & de Meuron’s best work: architecture that improves what already exists instead of competing with it.

Warm Modernism

The interiors draw inspiration from early modernism without ever becoming austere. Terrazzo floors, black-stained oak, brass, timber, muted colours, and beautifully crafted built-in furniture create spaces that feel calm, tactile, and deeply comfortable. Clever storage solutions and carefully considered proportions make the rooms feel larger than they are, while oval windows and subtle architectural details echo the language established throughout the public spaces below. There is discipline here. But also warmth. It’s modernism designed for living rather than admiring.

Still Basel’s Meeting Place

Perhaps the hotel’s greatest achievement is that it never stopped being Volkshaus. The lively brasserie continues to attract as many locals as hotel guests, serving seasonal cuisine in interiors where brass, wood, and historic details sit comfortably alongside contemporary design. Outside, the leafy courtyard remains one of Basel’s most enjoyable places to linger over lunch, coffee, or an evening drink beneath the trees. Then there’s the remarkable Imi Bar, created in collaboration with renowned German artist Imi Knoebel. Rich in colour, sculptural in composition, and unmistakably artistic, it injects an entirely different energy into the building—one that feels perfectly at home in a city synonymous with contemporary art. Beyond the hotel itself, the historic Festsaal continues to host concerts, literary events, film screenings, and cultural gatherings, ensuring Volkshaus remains an active part of Basel rather than simply a destination for visitors.

Perfectly Positioned for Basel

Located between the Rhine and Messe Basel, Volkshaus occupies one of the city’s most vibrant districts. Art Basel, the Kunstmuseum, galleries, independent cafés, and the Old Town are all within easy reach, making the hotel an obvious choice for design lovers visiting the city. During Art Basel especially, the lobby, courtyard, and bar become natural gathering places for artists, collectors, architects, and curators. It feels less like a hotel during the fair than a continuation of the exhibition itself.

Why It Works
