Blossom House Beijing Houhai
A Contemporary Reimagining of Tradition
Between Hutongs and High-Rises
Beijing is a city of striking contrasts—where Zaha Hadid’s futuristic towers rise beside centuries-old hutongs and serene lakeside scenes. In Houhai, a district where locals play the erhu and practice tai chi by the water, Blossom House Beijing Houhai emerges as a thoughtful reinterpretation of this duality. Housed in a former 1950s budget hotel, the property has been transformed by Singapore’s Ministry of Design (MOD) into a boutique retreat that bridges tradition with contemporary flair.
A Cohesive Vision
The site’s eclectic architectural mix—ornate eaves, sculptured balconies, and lattice windows—once felt disparate. MOD’s intervention unified the ensemble, cloaking the structures in a sophisticated charcoal gray and highlighting architectural details with accents of modern gold patina. The effect is restrained yet dramatic, grounding the property firmly within its historical context while giving it a sleek, urban identity.
Vivid Interiors
Step inside, and the contrast is striking. The 80 guestrooms pop with cobalt blues, vivid fuchsias, and golden yellows, infusing energy into otherwise neutral palettes. Clean lines and modern furnishings frame the bold accents, while select rooms feature private decks or balconies that open onto tranquil lake views. The result is a guestroom experience that feels fresh, dynamic, and unmistakably Beijing.
The Pink Rabbit Statement
The hotel’s playful centerpiece is The Pink Rabbit restaurant, crowned by 15-foot-tall pink wireframe rabbits lounging on the rooftop—at once whimsical and iconic. Inside, MOD drew inspiration from the cracked patterns of frozen lake ice, reimagining them as abstract wall treatments that play against exposed steel roof trusses. It’s an inventive, layered dining space that feels theatrical yet deeply connected to its environment.
DNA Hotels Verdict
Blossom House Beijing Houhai captures Beijing’s essence: historic and modern, restrained and bold, rooted yet playful. By uniting eclectic architecture, bold interiors, and unexpected design gestures, it redefines hutong hospitality for a new generation of travelers. A boutique stay that mirrors the city itself—dynamic, surprising, and endlessly layered.
