A Hunting Lodge Reborn with Wild Imagination

Deep within the forested landscapes of the Belgian Ardennes, where mist hangs low above the trees and winding roads disappear into pine-covered hills, Château de Vignée emerges like something between a historic manor and a beautifully strange dream. Originally built as an 18th-century hunting lodge, the château has been radically reinterpreted by Belgian creative studio WeWantMore into one of the country’s most distinctive countryside retreats — a place where heritage architecture, theatrical storytelling, dark sensuality, and nature-inspired luxury coexist with remarkable confidence. This is not rustic nostalgia polished into predictability. Château de Vignée embraces its contradictions fully: elegant yet playful, refined yet eccentric, grounded in history yet visually daring. The result feels cinematic — a contemporary Ardennes fairytale designed for adults.

Design Inspired by the Forest, Then Distorted Beautifully

WeWantMore approaches the château almost like a narrative world rather than a conventional hospitality project. The surrounding wilderness becomes both inspiration and material palette: locally quarried stone, dark woods, deep green marble, textured fabrics, smoked glass, brass accents, and moody lighting all echo the forests outside. Yet the hotel constantly interrupts this natural serenity with moments of surrealism and wit. A fox appears unexpectedly beneath glass. Antlers become sculptural elements. Velvet alcoves frame curious objects like scenes from a dream. Deep reds punctuate otherwise muted palettes. Taxidermy references the building’s hunting-lodge past, but always with irony and theatricality rather than traditional masculine heaviness. The interiors feel immersive rather than decorative — layered with symbolism, humor, texture, and atmosphere. Nothing here is generic luxury. Every room feels authored.

Rooms Wrapped in Darkness, Texture, and Calm

The guestrooms continue the hotel’s seductive tension between wilderness and refinement. Rich materials, dramatic contrasts, warm lighting, tactile fabrics, and sculptural furniture create spaces that feel deeply atmospheric without becoming oppressive. Bathrooms wrapped in natural stone and marble introduce spa-like calm, while oversized beds, layered textiles, and carefully controlled lighting make the rooms feel cocoon-like — ideal for disappearing into during long Ardennes weekends. The mood throughout is intimate and cinematic rather than overtly grand. Luxury here is emotional, sensory, and slightly mysterious.

A Michelin-Starred Expression of the Ardennes

Food forms a central chapter in the château’s storytelling. Under chef Wout Bru, the Michelin-starred restaurant interprets Ardennes cuisine through a lens of contemporary refinement while remaining deeply connected to local terroir. Wild game, forest herbs, seasonal vegetables, and regional ingredients are elevated into plates that mirror the hotel’s broader philosophy: rooted in nature, yet transformed through creativity and precision. The dining room itself continues the visual language of the hotel — warm, dramatic, elegant, and quietly theatrical. Long dinners here feel inseparable from the wider atmosphere of the château itself.

Wellness Emerging from the Landscape

The spa and wellness spaces shift the energy toward calm introspection. Stone arches, subdued palettes, warm textures, and filtered lighting create an environment that feels almost subterranean — as though carved directly into the Ardennes landscape. Pools, treatments, saunas, and botanical wellness rituals extend the hotel’s ongoing dialogue between body, place, and nature. Even here, the architecture avoids generic spa minimalism in favor of something moodier, richer, and more atmospheric.

A Hotel That Embraces Contradiction

What makes Château de Vignée particularly compelling is its refusal to settle into one identity. It is simultaneously luxurious and mischievous, historical and contemporary, serene and provocative. Many countryside luxury hotels seek perfection through restraint alone. Château de Vignée understands that personality matters just as much. It dares to surprise you.

DNA Hotels Verdict

Château de Vignée transforms the traditional luxury countryside hotel into something far more imaginative: an immersive design narrative where Belgian surrealism, Ardennes wilderness, and contemporary hospitality merge beautifully. Through WeWantMore’s fearless creative vision, the château becomes more than a restored hunting lodge — it becomes a living world of texture, atmosphere, humor, and emotion. Dark, seductive, intelligent, and wonderfully strange, it stands among Belgium’s most unforgettable design escapes.
