The Dean Munich
A bold lifestyle hotel where Jugendstil elegance, 1980s glamour, and contemporary creativity redefine one of Germany’s most stylish cities.
Why DNA Hotels Loves It
● Interiors by Tatjana von Stein that brilliantly blend Munich’s Jugendstil heritage with its overlooked 1980s creative scene.
● A destination in itself, combining contemporary art, Japanese dining, hidden cocktail bars, and design-led wellness.
● A refreshing portrait of Munich that moves far beyond Bavarian clichés to reveal the city’s sophisticated cultural identity.
A New Creative Chapter for Munich
Munich has long been associated with beer halls and Bavarian tradition, but The Dean Munich reveals a very different side of the city. Located in the increasingly creative Westend district, the hotel celebrates Munich’s artistic past while embracing its contemporary cultural energy. Housed within a reimagined postmodern building, the hotel’s 281 rooms and vibrant public spaces present a layered interpretation of the city—where Art Nouveau craftsmanship meets the exuberance of Munich’s influential 1980s music scene. Rather than relying on nostalgia, The Dean creates an atmosphere that feels stylish, playful, and unmistakably modern.
Design That Rewards Discovery
London-based, Munich-born designer Tatjana von Stein approached the project as a dialogue between two defining periods in Munich’s cultural history. Flowing Jugendstil curves, floral motifs, stained glass, and handcrafted details soften glossy lacquer finishes, polished metals, mirrored surfaces, and bold geometric forms inspired by the city’s glamorous nightclub era. The combination feels unexpected yet remarkably coherent, revealing new details with every visit. Throughout the hotel, vintage pieces by Josef Hoffmann sit comfortably beside bespoke furniture, velvet upholstery, sculptural lighting, and carefully layered materials that create interiors rich in texture without ever feeling excessive.
Art as Part of the Experience
Art is woven into the hotel rather than simply displayed. Curated by Christian Ganzenberg, the collection showcases contemporary Munich-based artists whose work explores the city’s hidden stories and creative identity. Rather than blending seamlessly into the interiors, many pieces deliberately introduce moments of contrast, creating an ongoing dialogue between architecture, design, and contemporary art. The result feels more like an evolving cultural space than a traditional hotel.
Japanese Dining and Hidden Cocktails
Ibasho, the hotel’s Japanese restaurant, continues the design narrative through warm timber, stained-glass screens, rust-coloured textiles, and a striking mirrored cocktail bar. Consultant chef Alex Craciun brings refined Japanese cuisine to Munich with seasonal ingredients, robata grilling, elegant sashimi, and beautifully composed sushi. Hidden behind the restaurant lies Noren, an intimate speakeasy layered with timber ceilings, tiger-print fabrics, vintage Gabriella Crespi lighting, glossy lacquer, and custom sound systems. It’s theatrical, atmospheric, and one of the hotel’s most memorable spaces.
Wellness with Urban Energy
The Dean’s Power wellness concept balances the energy of the public spaces with moments of restoration. An indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, treatment rooms, and fitness studio offer a contemporary approach to wellbeing, complemented by recovery-focused classes and thermal experiences. Meanwhile, the guestrooms provide a calming counterpoint to the dramatic public interiors. Soft greens, tactile materials, curved furniture, bespoke joinery, and subtle lighting create restful spaces that feel elegant without unnecessary ornament.
Why it Works
The Dean Munich challenges every outdated perception of the city. Through Tatjana von Stein’s richly layered interiors, a thoughtful contemporary art programme, outstanding dining, and an atmosphere that celebrates Munich’s overlooked creative history, it becomes far more than another lifestyle hotel. Sophisticated, theatrical, and full of personality, The Dean is helping redefine Munich as one of Europe’s most exciting design destinations.
