Hotel G San Francisco
Heritage Chic on Union Square
Type: design hotel, historic hotel
Vibe: lively
DNA: LHBTIQ+, singular suite
A Century-Old Icon, Reimagined
Just steps from Union Square, Hotel G occupies a 1908 building that has been part of San Francisco’s urban fabric for more than a century. Once home to the Fielding Hotel, the property has been meticulously reimagined into a boutique retreat that blends historic character with a distinctly modern, design-forward sensibility.
Design That Feels Effortless
Inside, the mood is pared-back sophistication. Exposed concrete columns, soft neutral palettes, and natural materials create a sense of calm amid the downtown buzz. Interiors strike a balance between heritage charm and minimalist chic, with tactile fabrics, warm wood tones, and artful lighting. The result is a look that’s timeless, urban, and understatedly elegant.
Rooms That Mix Old and New
The 153 guestrooms are spacious and clean-lined, outfitted with custom furniture, polished hardwood floors, and a curated collection of vintage-inspired art. Thoughtful details—like signature throws, oversized headboards, and bold monochrome accents—bring a residential warmth to spaces that otherwise embrace simplicity. Every room feels personal, like a stylish city pied-à-terre.
Perched at the very top, the Penthouse Level unfolds into two Terrace Suites and one show-stopping Grande Penthouse. Reimagined by Icelandic, LA-based designer Gulla Jónsdóttir, these new spaces slip seamlessly into the original blueprint—only now, everything feels sleeker, darker, and unmistakably more seductive. Raw, architectural elements like Dalmata marble, concrete-textured walls, brass accents, and whitewashed oak floors are tempered with plush, sculptural curves, mural-inspired art walls, and indulgent Kashmir leather beds. The result is a tactile balance of edge and elegance. Each suite opens onto its own private deck, furnished in rich Okoume wood and centered around a glowing fire pit. It’s an effortlessly intimate setting—perfect for a slow glass of champagne as the sky melts into sunset.
Dining & Social Flavor
Hotel G is also home to Benjamin Cooper, a much-loved craft cocktail lounge tucked inside the building. Playful, inventive, and a little irreverent, it’s a local favorite as much as a guest perk, underscoring the hotel’s seamless connection to the city’s creative spirit.
DNA Hotels Verdict
Hotel G proves that heritage can be chic without being fussy. By fusing its 1908 legacy with minimalist, design-forward interiors, it delivers a boutique experience that’s both stylish and approachable. For travelers craving Union Square convenience with modern San Francisco flair, it’s a perfect fit.
