A Form as Wild as the Landscape
Some hotels sit beside nature. Hotel Geysir feels sprouted from it. Opened in 2019 in the geothermal heart of Haukadalur Valley, this bold family-run property redefines what it means to be “next to the geysers”. Here, architecture, material, and movement converge to create a space as elemental as the eruptions themselves.
Designed by Brynhildur Sólveigardóttir, the hotel’s exterior is an exercise in visual harmony. A façade of earth-toned wood, glass, and concrete rises from the valley floor, intended to blend into the terrain rather than dominate it. The effect: a building that emerges subtly from the landscape, as though shaped by geothermal pressure. Inside, the industrial austerity of concrete is balanced by softer textures: plush furnishings, wool blankets, and strategic greenery in the lobby. Large windows saturate the interior with natural light, ensuring the geysers, hills, and skies remain constant companions.
Spaces That Breathe
The interiors are defined by minimalist Scandinavian simplicity sharpened by industrial bone structure. High ceilings and expansive glass elevate each room into a space of quiet reflection, offering uninterrupted views of Strokkur or the surrounding mossy hills. The lobby is a sensory gateway: tall ceilings, vertical greenery, and a lightness that helps your eyes — and mind — adjust after time spent outdoors.
Design That Welcomes the Wild
Hotel Geysir isn’t about grand gestures — it’s about quiet, contextual elegance. There’s no faux folklore here, only authentic material choices that resonate: raw concrete softened by fabrics, glass that frames erupting geysers, and wood that reminds you why you came.
DNA Hotels Verdict
Hotel Geysir isn’t just lodging — it’s geology you can sleep in. With its sculptural form, refined restraint, and total immersion in the geothermal landscape, it’s a rare hotel that elevates staying over sightseeing. If you measure a journey by how deeply it connects you to a place, Geysir is one of those rare destinations where design and nature are not in dialogue — they are the same language.
