Hotel Gfell, Völs am Schlern, South Tyrol, Italy
An Alpine Retreat Where Architecture Disappears into the Landscape
Why DNA Hotels Loves It
● Rather than dominating the landscape, noa* embedded the new hotel directly into the hillside, allowing architecture and nature to exist in perfect harmony.
● Contemporary interiors combine dark oak, natural stone, linen, and handcrafted details to reinterpret Alpine hospitality with remarkable restraint.
● Every room opens onto uninterrupted views of the Dolomites, creating one of South Tyrol’s most peaceful design retreats.
Built Into the Mountain
Some hotels are designed to stand out. Hotel Gfell was designed to disappear. Perched above Völs am Schlern in the heart of South Tyrol, this intimate 17-room retreat grows out of the hillside rather than sitting on top of it. When local architecture studio noa* was commissioned to expand the long-established Schönblick restaurant into a boutique hotel, they deliberately rejected the obvious solution of adding another floor. Instead, they carved the new accommodation directly into the landscape. The result preserves the panoramic views, minimizes the visual impact on the surrounding Dolomites, and creates a hotel that feels inseparable from its setting. Even the arrival reflects this philosophy, leading guests through the property’s historic barn before revealing the contemporary spaces hidden beneath the hillside.
An Interior Rooted in Nature
The architecture may be discreet, but the interiors leave a lasting impression. noa* embraced an honest palette of natural materials: dark durmast oak, raw stone, coarse linen, soft cotton, and handcrafted finishes. Together they create an atmosphere that feels calm, tactile, and unmistakably Alpine without relying on traditional mountain-lodge clichés. The restored public spaces continue the dialogue between old and new. Traditional architecture has been carefully preserved while the reception, lounge, and breakfast room adopt a lighter, more contemporary expression. At the centre stands a sculptural column fireplace—a modern interpretation of the traditional Alpine hearth that naturally draws guests together.
Rooms Framed by the Dolomites
Because the hotel is embedded within the hillside, every room enjoys an uninterrupted connection with the landscape. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame forests, alpine meadows, and the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites, transforming each guestroom into a quiet observatory of South Tyrol’s changing seasons. Inside, exposed timber trusses reference the region’s traditional farmhouses while open-plan layouts, refined detailing, and carefully selected materials introduce a distinctly contemporary character. Luxury here isn’t defined by excess. It’s measured by silence, natural light, and the view beyond the glass.
Wellness That Blends into the Landscape
The same understated philosophy continues in the wellness area. A sauna, relaxation room, and panoramic terrace extend naturally into the hillside, allowing guests to unwind while remaining visually connected to the surrounding mountains. Nothing competes with the scenery. Architecture simply provides the frame.
Dining with a Sense of Place
Schönblick remains the heart of the property. Its panoramic terrace overlooks forests and valleys, while the kitchen celebrates South Tyrol through regional ingredients, local wines, and seasonal dishes served against one of the most spectacular backdrops in the Dolomites. Whether returning from a day of hiking or simply watching the sun disappear behind the Schlern massif, the experience feels deeply connected to its surroundings.
Why It Matters
Hotel Gfell demonstrates that sustainable architecture isn’t only about materials or technology. Sometimes it’s about knowing when not to build. By embedding the hotel into the mountain instead of rising above it, noa* has created a retreat that respects both its landscape and its heritage. Contemporary comfort, traditional craftsmanship, and remarkable restraint combine to produce one of South Tyrol’s finest examples of modern Alpine hospitality. For travellers seeking silence, design, and an authentic connection to the Dolomites, Hotel Gfell proves that the most memorable architecture is often the architecture that knows when to step back.
