Gladstone House, Toronto
Where Heritage Meets High Art

A Victorian Icon with a Modern Muse

Welcome to Gladstone House, the oldest continually operating hotel in Toronto—and maybe its most surprising. Housed in a grand 1889 Victorian building with serious historical bones (think original brickwork, stained glass, and a hand-cranked elevator that still works), the hotel sits at the creative heart of Queen Street West, one of the city’s most vibrant cultural corridors.

But this isn’t just a nod to the past. Thanks to a meticulous renovation and a bold artistic vision, Gladstone House is now a fully-fledged art hotel, where every hallway, wall, and room tells a story—many of them a little unexpected.

Art as a Roommate

Each of the 55 guest rooms has been transformed into a mini-gallery by local artists, meaning no two stays are ever the same. Some favorites? There’s “Teen Queen” by Cecilia Berkovic, a tongue-in-cheek shrine to 90s girlhood nostalgia, and “The Parlour of Twilight” by Simone Moir and Corwyn Lund, where surrealism meets cozy mystery.

For culinary kitsch, “Surreal Gourmet” by Food Network star Bob Blumer goes full whimsical, with tomato-slice pillows and a room service menu for the absurd. The hotel recently added 16 new rooms, all keeping pace with the same quirky, design-forward energy.

Queen West from the Inside Out

More than just a place to sleep, Gladstone House functions as a cultural hub. The public spaces include rotating art exhibitions, community programming, and a lobby-bar that feels more gallery lounge than hotel lobby.

The recent overhaul—post-acquisition by Streetcar Developments—polished up the heritage elements while doubling down on creative integrity. The result? A hotel that doesn’t just reflect its neighborhood—it helps define it.

DNA Hotels Verdict

A Toronto classic with a fresh coat of culture. Gladstone House fuses Victorian bones with art-school soul, giving every stay a strong sense of place and personality. A stay here is part exhibition, part escape, and totally one-of-a-kind.
