A Modernist Landmark Reborn
Perched on the shores of Lady Bird Lake, The LINE Austin occupies one of the city’s most recognisable mid-century buildings. Originally opened in 1965 as the Crest Inn, the hotel has undergone a remarkable transformation that preserves its architectural heritage while embracing Austin’s contemporary identity. The result is a destination where classic modernism meets industrial textures, native materials and lush planting, creating a seamless dialogue between city and landscape.
Designed Around the Landscape
Local architect Michael Hsu and interior designer Sean Knibb approached the renovation with remarkable restraint, allowing the building’s original character to remain at the forefront. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of either downtown Austin or the lake, while exposed concrete, warm timber, textured plaster and suspended greenery soften the modernist architecture. Throughout the hotel, more than 500 commissioned works by Central Texas artists reinforce a deep connection to the local creative community.
Minimalism with a Texan Soul
The 428 guestrooms are understated yet richly detailed. Sandblasted plywood headboards echo the curves of the nearby river, while saddle leather accents reference Texas ranching traditions. Soft palettes of muted greys, pale pinks and blues create a calming backdrop, allowing carefully crafted furnishings and expansive views to take centre stage. The result is minimalist without feeling austere and unmistakably rooted in Austin.
Where Austin Comes Together
The LINE is far more than a hotel. Its open lobby, waterfront infinity pool and lively public spaces have become gathering places for both visitors and locals. At Arlo Grey, Top Chef winner Kristen Kish brings together French and Italian influences with seasonal Texan ingredients, while Alfred Coffee adds a distinctly West Coast touch to the ground floor. Just outside, the hike-and-bike trail follows Lady Bird Lake, Congress Avenue Bridge hosts the world’s largest urban bat colony each evening, and Austin’s celebrated music, food and nightlife are all within easy walking distance. The LINE captures the city’s unique balance of creativity, nature and urban energy, making it one of Austin’s defining places to stay.
