Hotel Magdalena
Lake-Inspired Modernism in the Heart of Austin

A Hill Country Retreat, Reimagined

Hotel Magdalena isn’t just a hotel—it’s a story about Austin’s soul, written in limestone, wood, and water. Tucked into the bustling South Congress neighborhood, this retreat takes its cues from the natural rhythms of Texas Hill Country. Designed by Lake Flato Architects, the property channels the laid-back nostalgia of 1970s lake culture—think summer camp for grown-ups, with a refined design edge.

Design in Dialogue with Nature

The hotel’s architecture plays with elevation, mimicking the slope of Hill Country terrain. Guestroom buildings cascade down the site like cabins set along a riverside bluff, connected by boardwalk-style walkways and courtyards lush with native plantings. Materials are raw yet refined—Douglas fir beams, limestone walls, and salvaged wood are left to weather beautifully against the Texan sun. Interiors are crafted with a light hand: terrazzo floors, walnut paneling, woven rugs, and a restrained palette that keeps focus on form, texture, and natural light.

Rooms that Breathe

Each of the 89 rooms feels both grounded and airy, with large windows and breezy terraces framing views of the central courtyard and Austin skyline. Sliding doors, muted textiles, and playful details—like custom furniture and pops of color inspired by 70s lake culture—create a mood that’s casual yet carefully curated. It’s the kind of space where you drop your bags, step out barefoot onto the balcony, and feel instantly at ease.

Poolside Nostalgia

At the heart of the hotel lies its sparkling, elevated pool—an homage to Barton Springs and the lazy, sun-drenched afternoons of Austin’s outdoor life. Wooden decks, lounge chairs, and striped umbrellas set the scene, while poolside service brings craft cocktails and light bites right to your chair. It’s not just a pool; it’s a social hub, echoing the conviviality of lakeside docks where people gather to swim, talk, and play.

Food & Community

Summer House on Music Lane, the hotel’s restaurant, reinforces the narrative of lakeside living with a menu built around live-fire cooking and seasonal Texas ingredients. Its indoor-outdoor design blurs boundaries between dining room, patio, and courtyard, creating a communal vibe that feels as open and relaxed as a backyard cookout—with just the right touch of sophistication.

The Spirit of South Congress

Though rooted in Hill Country inspiration, Hotel Magdalena is undeniably South Congress: creative, eclectic, and alive with Austin energy. Steps away from music venues, independent boutiques, and street-side taco joints, it gives guests a tranquil retreat while keeping them firmly plugged into the city’s cultural current.

DNA Hotels Verdict

Hotel Magdalena distills the joy of Austin’s outdoors into a design-forward urban retreat. With its lake-house nostalgia, crafted architecture, and effortless charm, it offers travelers the rare gift of feeling both far away and right in the middle of it all. For design lovers, nature seekers, and Austin dreamers, this is the city’s most soulful modern stay.
