The DNA

Hotel Metropol Palace – Belgrade’s Grande Dame of Modernist Prestige
Where Socialist-era ambition meets contemporary elegance

A Monument of Modernism Comes to Life (Again)

Originally designed by architect Dragiša Brašovan and opened on 20 August 1957, Hotel Metropol (as it was then known) was built as a monumental symbol of Yugoslavia’s modernist aspirations. In the vibrant decades that followed, the hotel became the planet’s upper-crust gathering place—hosting New Year’s Eve celebrations for President Tito and glittering global arrivals.

Following a devastating fire in 2007 and a five-year, €67 million restoration, the hotel triumphantly reopened in 2012 under a new name—Metropol Palace. The renovation, led by architect Miodrag Trpković and the firm DOMAA, introduced modern comforts while preserving the site’s cultural and architectural gravitas.

A Palatial Arrival with Story and Spirit

Today, the hotel’s striking white façade, stained glass window, and mosaic murals stand as Balkan landmarks, protected as a cultural monument since 2001. Inside, guests are greeted by a lobby featuring a marbled floor and an inlaid wood wall artwork—crafted from colorful wood fragments and commissioned by Brašovan himself.

Modern Hospitality with Historical Weight

The Metropol Palace offers 108 rooms and 128 suites, spread across its now-expanded footprint of 30,000 m². Its expansive Spa & Fitness Center includes a 25 m indoor pool, sauna, steam baths, and treatment rooms with Vršac park views. Culinary experiences range from elegant restaurants and rooftop bars to intimate lounges, all offering seamless blends of tradition and sophistication.

DNA Hotels Verdict

Hotel Metropol Palace stands not just as accommodation, but as a living emblem of Belgrade’s modernist dream, socialist resilience, and renewed elegance. With its preserved grandeur, heartfelt hospitality, and reimagined spaces, it offers guests the rare feeling of residing in both a city’s history and its present. For travelers who seek lodgings rich in narrative, design, and sociocultural weight, this is the foundational anchor of Belgrade.
