Hotel Ottilia — Industrial Chic with a Golden Glint
A bold Carlsberg City landmark where brewing heritage meets contemporary Danish design

From Brewery Bones to Boutique Beauty

Rising from the heart of Copenhagen’s rapidly evolving Carlsberg City District, Hotel Ottilia occupies two iconic brewery buildings: Maltmagasinet from 1881 and Lagerkælder 3 from 1969. Both structures—once home to grain silos, malt stores, and vast beer tanks—have been transformed with reverence by Arkitema Architects and Brøchner Hotels. Named after Ottilia Jacobsen, the Scottish-born wife of brewer Carl Jacobsen, the hotel embraces its origin story through preserved industrial detailing and subtle thistle motifs woven into the interiors.

A Facade You’ll Never Forget

On one side, 64 shimmering golden discs—original leaf-gilded covers for Carlsberg’s horizontal beer tanks—form one of Copenhagen’s most instantly recognisable façades. On the opposite side, 72 circular windows carve into the brick, filling the rooms with soft Nordic light and framing new angles of the district below. Where necessary, vertical windows slip discreetly between the discs to brighten newly carved guest spaces, striking a careful balance between preservation and reinvention.

Industrial Drama, Sculptural Light

Inside, the hotel’s raw architectural DNA has been meticulously preserved: rough concrete walls, exposed metal beams, towering ceilings, and original brewery machinery. In the Dipylon Hall—once a malt storage zone, now a lounge—20-metre ceilings soar above modern Danish furniture. Suspended malt hoppers float as sculptural relics above a reflective water basin, while a dramatic lighting installation by Niclas Hoflin winds upward through the building like a glowing industrial spine. It’s immersive, monumental, and unmistakably Carlsberg.

Rooms with Character and Curved Light

Across 155 rooms and suites, the design merges industrial edge with Scandinavian warmth. Deluxe rooms on the Bryggernes Plads side feature the hotel’s signature circular windows, complete with custom leather-cushioned seating built into the curve—a perfect perch for slow mornings or twilight city-gazing. Rooms behind the golden discs use clever “zipper windows” for privacy and light. With monochrome palettes, metal details, raw textures, and REN or Humdakin toiletries, the aesthetic is sleek, tactile, and distinctly modern.

Food, Wine, and Social Rituals

The hotel’s rooftop restaurant, Tramonto, brings Italian soul to Copenhagen’s skyline. With 360-degree views, an open kitchen, and both indoor and terrace seating, it transforms sunset into an event—wood-fired pizzas, burrata, and seasonal dishes served with cosmopolitan flair. Downstairs, the first-floor bar leans into the gin renaissance, offering a curated selection from Denmark and beyond. And every evening, guests gather for Brøchner’s beloved Wine Hour—an easy, communal pause before the city lights up.

Wellness in Vaulted Brick and Brew-Laced History

On the lower levels, beneath original vaulted brick ceilings, guests can book access to the luxurious AIRE Ancient Baths—a series of atmospheric thermal pools, rituals, massages, and steam rooms inspired by old-world bathing cultures. The hotel’s compact fitness room, meanwhile, offers an intimate, crowd-free workout space.

A District Alive with Story and Regeneration

Carlsberg Byen is a neighbourhood in flux—where 19th-century brewery gates, including the famed Dipylon Gate and Elephant Gate, sit alongside cutting-edge architecture, cafés, galleries, markets, and family-friendly plazas. Step outside Hotel Ottilia and you’re surrounded by Copenhagen’s evolving cityscape: Enghave Park, Humleby, and the VEGA music venue are all nearby, while the zoo is a fifteen-minute walk through leafy streets.

DNA Hotels Verdict

Hotel Ottilia is architectural storytelling at its finest—a heritage brewery transformed into a design-led boutique hotel of scale, soul, and unmistakable character. With its golden-disc façade, monumental interiors, rooftop dining, and deep respect for industrial history, it stands as one of Copenhagen’s most unique and atmospheric stays. For travellers drawn to spaces with texture, legacy, and bold design intelligence, Ottilia is a standout.
