A Masterpiece of Absence
Housed in a historic 1861 palazzo in the sleepy town of Gagliano del Capo, Palazzo Daniele is a study in restraint—where less truly becomes more. Once the private residence of art collector and aristocrat Francesco Petrucci, and now a sibling to Rome’s provocatively styled G-Rough, the palazzo has been reborn as a minimalist sanctuary that feels both regal and radical.
The redesign, by Milan-based practice Palomba Serafini, strips back the layers of time with surgical precision. Gone are the heavy drapes and antique clutter; in their place, a curated emptiness allows the grandeur of the original architecture—frescoed ceilings, mosaic-tiled floors, arched colonnades—to breathe. This is not a restoration, but a reverent reinvention.
Artful Simplicity
With 17 suites, the experience is deeply personal and immersive. Each space invites contemplation, balancing old-world bones with contemporary furniture, sculptural lighting, and raw, poetic beauty. Cracks in plaster become part of the narrative. Minimalist installations by contemporary artists quietly punctuate the rooms, creating a living gallery rather than a static monument.
Bathrooms open into the suites like sculptures in their own right—freestanding sinks, modern lines, and monastic materials merging seamlessly with their historic surroundings. Throughout, the aesthetic embraces imperfection and emptiness as a form of luxury.
The Spirit of Salento
Beyond its walls, the surrounding Puglian landscape offers olive groves, sun-drenched courtyards, and the salty air of the Ionian Sea just minutes away. Back at the palazzo, guests gather around a communal table beneath a vaulted ceiling for seasonal dinners that feel more like art performances than meals. The atmosphere is serene, cerebral, and soulful—a far cry from the bustle of Italy’s more obvious luxury haunts.
DNA Hotels Verdict
Palazzo Daniele is a bold, intellectual retreat that redefines luxury as space, silence, and meaning. It’s for aesthetes, romantics, and deep thinkers who crave an encounter with beauty, not just comfort. A poetic expression of Puglia’s soul, wrapped in restraint and reverence.
