Pergola Residence
Nature and Design in Perfect Harmony
Architecture Rooted in the Land
Set on the slopes near Merano, Pergola Residence is the work of Italian architect Matteo Thun, who drew inspiration directly from the terraced vineyards that cradle the site. Its design is a seamless extension of the landscape: tiered volumes echo the vineyard terraces, while green roofs and slender wooden pergolas soften the architecture, blending it naturally into the South Tyrolean hills. The façades combine rubble stone walls—a nod to the centuries-old terraces—with warm larch wood, grounding the building in local tradition while offering a refined, contemporary expression.
Apartments that Breathe with Nature
With just 14 units, the residence feels intimate and exclusive. Each apartment is south-facing, opening onto private terraces that frame wide views over the Etsch Valley. Interiors are pared back but deeply tactile: wood dominates, from natural flooring and wall cladding to bespoke furniture designed for comfort without excess. The design philosophy is minimalist yet warm, allowing materials, textures, and light to speak for themselves. Every detail is carefully chosen to create an atmosphere of quiet luxury, while the real star—the panorama—remains unobstructed.
Design Philosophy: Minimalism with Soul
Thun’s approach at Pergola is one of restraint. Rather than imposing grandeur, the architecture celebrates simplicity and integration, creating a rhythm that mirrors the surrounding vineyards. Wooden pergolas filter the light, green roofs blend into the hillside, and stone façades resonate with the rustic walls just beyond the property. Inside, the aesthetic avoids ornamentation, offering instead an elegant backdrop for the drama of nature outside the windows.
A Sanctuary Above the Valley
Pergola Residence is not a traditional hotel, nor is it a standard holiday rental. It is an invitation to live within the landscape—to watch the changing light over the valley, to feel the connection between architecture and earth, and to experience South Tyrol through a lens of design and stillness. Here, nature sets the pace, and design makes space for it.
DNA Hotels Verdict
Pergola Residence is a quiet triumph of contextual design—Matteo Thun’s ode to the terraced vineyards of Merano. With its stone-and-wood façades, south-facing apartments, and architecture that disappears into its setting, it offers a stay that is less about spectacle and more about serenity. For travelers seeking a refined, design-driven retreat rooted in the rhythms of the land, this hillside residence captures South Tyrol’s timeless beauty with graceful precision.
