RAN BAAS The Palace, Patiala, India
Punjab’s Majestic Revival
Heritage Meets Hospitality
Nestled within the historic Qila Mubarak Fort in Patiala, RAN BAAS The Palace stands as Punjab’s first luxury palace hotel—a captivating blend of architectural conservation, royal grandeur, and contemporary indulgence. Housed in an 18th-century Sikh fort once abandoned for decades, this 35-suite palace has been resurrected with extraordinary care, earning global acclaim as one of the World’s Most Beautiful New Hotels 2025.
Guided by an all-woman team—led by renowned conservation architect Abha Narain Lambah—the restoration became a benchmark in heritage revival. Over three painstaking years, local artisans were retrained in centuries-old building techniques: historic lime plaster was reapplied by hand, intricate frescoes were delicately retouched, and crumbling vaulted roofs were structurally reborn. Mughal, Sikh, and Rajput architectural detailing has been carefully conserved and celebrated—filigree jharokhas, cusped arches, and scalloped domes now stand gleaming again against the Patiala sky.
Inside, the design bridges eras with grace: crystal chandeliers glimmer in frescoed halls, rich marble inlaid floors meet silk carpets, and heritage teak furniture contrasts with bespoke contemporary pieces. Luxury here is never loud—it’s royal, not ostentatious.
Suites That Tell a Story
RAN BAAS offers 35 uniquely designed suites, each narrating its own chapter of Patiala’s layered past. Some are sprawling palatial retreats with soaring ceilings, carved niches, and private terraces overlooking the restored fortress grounds. Others are intimate sanctuaries tucked into the palace’s quieter wings, adorned with hand-painted murals, inlaid marble panels, and jewel-toned textiles.
Despite the grandeur, comfort is paramount: plush bedding, deep soaking tubs, modern climate control, and intuitive technology blend seamlessly with the preserved heritage architecture. Several suites showcase original 18th-century frescoes painstakingly conserved during the restoration—a rare chance to sleep amid living history.
Culture on the Menu
At Neel, the palace’s all-day dining room, global flavors meet regional soul. Locally sourced Punjabi ingredients are elevated into contemporary dishes, served under soaring Mughal arches and shimmering chandeliers. Breakfast might bring masala-spiced shakshuka with warm kulchas; dinner could be a delicate biryani perfumed with saffron and rose, plated like art.
For something more spirited, the Patiala Bar revives the princely nightlife of old. Signature cocktails arrive in cut-crystal glasses beneath peacock-inspired chandeliers, while live Punjabi folk musicians perform softly under the room’s richly patterned arches. Here, the atmosphere is as intoxicating as the drinks.
A Living Legacy
RAN BAAS The Palace is more than a stay—it’s a cultural renaissance. The project has not only preserved a landmark but has rekindled Patiala’s place on India’s luxury travel map. The palace now supports local employment, showcases regional craftsmanship, and celebrates Punjab’s artistic and architectural heritage on a global stage. Beyond the grand salons and gilded suites, quiet elegance defines the experience: a courtyard pool glinting beneath the sun, jasmine-scented gardens threaded with marble pathways, and colonnaded verandas that invite unhurried afternoons.
The DNA Hotels Verdict
RAN BAAS The Palace is heritage brought to life—a museum-hotel that transcends both time and style. It’s not just restoration; it’s reinvention: regal architecture meets immersive hospitality. For design lovers, history seekers, and luxury travelers with a taste for the extraordinary, this is Punjab’s most breathtaking destination yet.
