In the historic Kaat Benahid quarter of Marrakech’s medina, Dar Al Dall lives up to its name. Meaning “House of Shadows,” the riad is shaped by the shifting play of light across carved plaster, hand-cut zellige, arched galleries, palm fronds, and mosaic floors. Part of Pierre Ferland’s This Time Tomorrow hospitality project, the property reopened after a meticulous seven-year restoration carried out with Trab Design and Barcelona-based RecDi8. The result is one of Marrakech’s most considered riad transformations: intimate, atmospheric, and deeply rooted in local architectural tradition. From the street, little is revealed. A Riad Built Around Stillness

Dar Al Dall follows the essential logic of a traditional Marrakshi home. Life is organized around a single central courtyard, planted with four palms and anchored by a quietly bubbling fountain. This shaded courtyard acts as the heart of the house. Guests drift between the bhou seating nook, the glass-walled dining room, the red-and-gold salon, and the surrounding galleries, always returning to the same play of water, shadow, and filtered light. The scale feels generous yet deeply private. Rather than overwhelming guests with spectacle, the riad invites attention to small moments: the sound of the fountain, the texture of plaster, the glow of lanterns at dusk.

Moroccan Craft, Reinterpreted

Hand-chiseled zellige, carved plaster, carved wood, brass details, mosaic floors, and velvet sedari seating are all used with restraint and imagination. RecDi8’s interiors layer local references with broader cultural influences. Mosaic patterns nod to Seville’s Royal Alcázar, while the kitchen floor draws inspiration from the Institut Suédois in Paris. Spice-market colors appear throughout the house: cinnamon, ginger, umber, saffron, deep red, soft green, and burnished gold. The result is richly decorative yet remarkably calm. Every surface feels crafted, but nothing feels overworked.

Five Residences, Five Moods

Dar Al Dall has just five suites, described as residences for good reason. Each occupies a generous portion of the house and functions as a private retreat within the riad. One suite sits on the ground floor, while the others are arranged behind the deep colonnaded gallery upstairs. Each has its own orientation, palette, and atmosphere, with lounges, writing desks, dressing areas, and large marble bathrooms. Zellige fireplaces act as focal points, each rendered in a different spice-inspired color scheme. Brass four-poster beds, velvet sofas, woven textile headboards, tasselled curtains, lacquered desks, and contemporary artworks create spaces that feel sensual, introspective, and deeply personal.

A Rooftop Above the Medina

If the courtyard is the riad’s inward-looking heart, the rooftop is its release. Spread across multiple levels, the terrace opens toward the medina and the distant Atlas Mountains. It is designed as a series of quiet zones rather than a single showpiece: shaded seating, raised viewing platforms, loungers, pergolas, and corners for breakfast, reading, or an evening aperitif. After the sensory intensity of the souks, the roof offers a rare feeling of space and air. It is one of the most memorable places in the house.

Hospitality as Curation

Dar Al Dall is designed for travelers who want Marrakech to feel considered rather than chaotic. Guests can book a full Moroccan treatment with a therapist or reserve the space for private use with traditional products. Kaat Benahid is one of the oldest and most atmospheric parts of Marrakech.
